Trend-setting Interior Designer, Kenneth Brown blends the warmth of Southern hospitality with clean Southern California lines. Kenneth's uncompromising commitment to solving design problems in an original way has led the young designer to his own flourishing business in an impressively short time.
In 1997, when Kenneth was invited by a California investor to redesign the interior of a small Venice home, he never dreamed he would find himself where he is today. He is among Los Angeles' most successful designers, retained to design interiors of multi–million dollar homes as well as working with clients on a tight budget. After completing twelve interior restoration projects in less than two years, he launched his own interior design firm, which blossomed through word of mouth.
The concept of gracious living came early to Kenneth, who grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His interest in design led him to studies at Louisiana State University, where he was trained extensively in drafting, codes, and building materials. His schooling included a watershed year at Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester, England, where he studied both industrial and interior design and began "to see things differently." During that same year, trips to Krakow, Poland and throughout Europe were highly influential in his early design development. "Design to me is a potpourri of travel, of history, and people -- what they're wearing, what they're eating, and what they're doing becomes part of my vocabulary as a designer, as well as my reference book," reflects Kenneth.
Brown stands out among contemporary designers in his fascination with structure, use of rich color, and delight in small details. His trademark is choosing interesting fabrics and accessories and using them simply. The look is clean, relying on unusual color combinations and appealing textures rather than elaborate designs and heavy patterns. Contractor/builder Lorrie Webb, who has worked with Kenneth on dozens of homes, commented that "Kenneth gets his inspiration from ordinary objects. He designed an entire house based on a tea cup he found while at a party in Palm Springs."
Kenneth's unique environments reflect his belief that a sense of comfort should be part of any home's purpose, and his vision includes creating homes that are welcoming comfortable, and suited to his client's lifestyle. And his easy-going personality creates a stress-free situation during the process. He believes in listening to clients without imposing a particular look. "I sit down with my clients and I get to know them," says Kenneth. "A good designer listens to what the client likes and needs, and what kind of home they want to live in. Then as a designer, I give them the best materials and sources that suit their needs."
Kenneth has appeared as a design expert on many home improvement cable television programs, such as HGTV's House Hunters, Homes Across America, Designers Challenge, and The Kitty Bartholomew Show, and will be seen on upcoming shows on The Style Network and MTV. He is a winner of the Gold Nugget Grand Award for the Best Renovated Single Home, presented by the National Home Builder Association and Builder Magazine.
Current projects include the restoration of a historic 1920's Spanish home in the exclusive Hancock Park area of Los Angeles, a penthouse remodel in the chic Wilshire Corridor, and a small bungalow in the Hollywood Hills. |
